Red Bull team boss discusses Max Verstappen’s win and more

RED BULL team boss Monisha Kaltenmark on Thursday said the performance of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo in the second race of the season showed that “it is not just about points” for the Red Bull team.

Verstappen won the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday for the third successive year and Ricciardo also claimed his third win when he took a thrilling and controversial victory in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

“It seems to be the best season yet to have Red Bull in the points,” said Kaltenmark. “After the first race Daniel Ricciardo had a great drive, he was very quick in Q1 but was not able to race a single lap.

“We are happy to have him in the points again, as you saw Max in Austria, it is not only about the points.”

Red Bull’s victory came despite two red flag periods which both resulted in penalties for both drivers, while the team said that it was also a victory for “common sense”.

Team boss Kaltenmark added that Red Bull had to “do it the right way” after the Red Bull Racing pair had finished both races of the season after incidents.

“We were able to call a spade a spade,” Kaltenmark said. “We will never have any incidents, but when you have to do it the right way you get away with it.”

“It is a victory for common sense, that is what we needed and for that we are very happy.”

Kaltenmark added that Red Bull Racing had improved in 2019 even though the team had not been fully consistent and that it had made improvements this season.

“We are still not consistent, we never are in the first race and we are never consistent as well,” Kaltenmark said. “We have improved in terms of execution all through the first part of the season, but we also have to improve in consistency and make a good step.

“It was good to see the team have a good race in Austria as well, we will have to see how it continues to go.”
