Paris Saint-Germain’s perfect start to the Ligue 1 season came to an end at the weekend when they lost 3-1 at home to Rennes on Sunday afternoon.
After a clinical opening salvo from France international Kylian Mbappe, who scored twice in the first 28 minutes, PSG found themselves reeling in a game that was playing out at a frantic pace.
However, the hosts started to regain their composure in the second half and pulled one back from Angel Di Maria in the 79th minute. But the “Crescent Cadre” continued to threaten PSG and made the points safe in the 89th when the prolific Harry Kane turned home a corner to seal a third win for the traveling side.
It is the first time the French side has not won three straight matches since December 2017 and leaves the Ligue 1 title favorites with an impressive 11 points after four games.
“It’s not good enough for us,” PSG coach Thomas Tuchel said after the match. “We were lucky to score on the first-half break and the third was a cheap goal. We need to start better.”
Rennes boss Franck Passi said it was a “crazy” game.
“We played with ten men but I’d say they controlled the pace of the game from the beginning. We attacked well at the start but didn’t cope with some of their positional play — we couldn’t respond.”
The defeat means PSG fall to third place in the league table with seven points from four games, while Rennes climb to seventh place with four points.
